History of Three gates-ahmedabad


Teen Darwaza is an architectural marvel, the beauty of which is surely going to leave you awestruck. Consisting of gorgeous arched gates, Teen Darwaza is one of the longest as well as the oldest gateways of the Ahmedabad city. It was established in the year 141 A.D. by Sultan Ahmed Shah, who founded the city of Ahmedabad.

The Teen Darwaja, the triple arched gateway was originally meant to serve as the royal entrance to the Royal Square. It was a trio of massive arches, from where emperor Jehangir and Noor Jehan used to watch the processions from the palace to the Jama Masjid. It is one of the oldest and also the largest of all the gateways; Ahmed Shah constructed the Teen Darwaza with the Bhadra fort. The darwaza was a witness to many a procession and religious ceremonies that happened in the huge ground between the gate and the fort of Bhadra. Its strong bastions and finely carved designs are beautiful.


A grand gateway at Ahmedabad with three arched gates is an example of magnificent Gujarati architecture. It is one of the oldest and longest gateways in Ahmedabad. Located adjacent to Bhadra Fort, this darwaza was built by Ahmed Shah in 141 A.D.


The intricately carved darwaza was used by Mughal emperor, Jahangir and his wife Noor Jahan to watch the processions from the place to Jama Masjid. This grand gateway was also used as an entrance to Royal Square at Bhadra Fort.


The darwaza served as a witness ground to watch processions and religious ceremonies that took place at the huge ground between the gate and the fort of Bhadra.

Gujarati architectural designs intricately design the walls and pillars at teen darwaza. The ornately carved doors are finest examples of Islamic architecture in India, dating back to the time of the Ahmed Shah Sultans of medieval times.

Its intricately carved windows have beautiful jali or mesh work that is a feature of all buildings of the period in Ahmedabad. Each of its five semi-circular windows is different from the other. The central one has a Tree of Life with snakes draped around five palm trees. This is being used as the symbol of the Gujarat Government.

Lying adjacent to the famous Bhadra fort, Teen Darwaza has been intricately carved. Initially, it served as an entrance to Royal Square at Bhadra Fort. The great Mughal emperor Jahangir used to come here along with his beloved wife Noorjahan, to take a look at the procession that started from this grand gateway and went nonstop till Jama Masjid. The walls and pillars of Teen Darwaza are beautifully designed.

Teen Darwaza of Ahmedabad, India is truly an epitome of the fine Islamic architecture. The windows of this fabulous monument are semi circular and adorned using mesh work. The central window depicts the tree of life. Five palm trees are shown that are covered with snakes. This portrayal also serves as the symbol of the Gujarat Government. This regal citadel is one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Ahmedabad.
